Taking “The sky is the limit” mantra to another level, Sky Poker really got creative and launched a poker site that boasts a few very unique features. Backed by British owned Sky Broadcasting, this poker site is the result of a very clever mix of old-school television marketing and new-school Internet technology. If you’ve ever wanted to be a television Star (well, kinda) then this may be the closest you’ll ever get. You see, from time to time Sky Broadcasting will televise live coverage of select online games. So if you happen to playing and see your table on television bust out the DVR so you can show all of your pals later.
Offered only as a Java client there is no download required to play SkyPoker. While this is attractive to some players (Mac and Linux fans especially) it’s not so attractive to others that prefer a native client on their machine. The upside is that you can play instantly, most anywhere, on most any type of machine. The downside is that when traffic gets heavy the games tend to slow down. Sky Poker claims to have just increased the speed of the card dealing 6X, which should improve this area. The interface is quite easy to understand however and navigating around to find the various options is pretty straightforward.

The story as it relates to game selection is the same here as it is with most sites in the low traffic range, with the majority of players gravitating towards the popular Texas Hold’em tables at the lower to middle limits. There’s a good selection of tournaments and sit and go events with many “spin off” events such as the “Last Man Standing” and “Oceans Twelve” to keep you entertained. As we mentioned earlier, you also have the chance to appear on live television as the daily 9PM tournament can be viewed on Sky Channel 865. Complete with live commentary from celebrity and professional guests it makes for interesting viewing.
Sky Poker spreads the following games:
The Sky Poker loyalty program is somewhat basic with a welcome deposit bonus and points earned that can be used for tournament entries. There doesn’t appear to be any sort of store or prizes that can be earned from points at this time.
If you run into trouble and need assistance you may phone them or use email to ask for help. Since they’re a large, known name in the UK service is not an afterthought at Sky Poker so expect to be treated quite nicely.
Overall most players will find Sky Poker a nice site. It’s easy to deposit here as long as you’re not a US player (not allowed) and if you prefer ease of use with no downloads (or you’re behind a firewall) you may prefer to stick with Sky Poker. Download Sky Poker Software Now!
