With a second-place finish in the WSOP.com $600 Pot Limit Omaha event to his name, Gooch didn’t waste his latest opportunity.

Anteing up in the $1,000 Hold’em double stack, the American had to battle through a field of 1,333 to win his first WSOP bracelet.

Home Advantage Helps Gooch

After cutting his way through an international mix of players, Gooch started the final table with the chip lead. However, with veteran pro Max Pescatori among the final nine, winning wasn’t going to be easy.

Fortunately for the American, his Italian counterpart didn’t last more than a few hands.

With a short stack and J7, Pescatori made a move. Despite having live cards, the WSOP bracelet winner couldn’t catch a break against the K9of Anthony Augustino or the K9 of Dario Sammartino.

With two tough players picking up chips, the heat was on Gooch to make a move. To compound matters, Italy’s second all-time money winner Sammartino was on a tear.

Dispatching with Ran Koller to leave just five in the mix, it looked as though the Italian would take home the title. However, the combined efforts of Gooch and Augustino finally pushed out Sammartino in fourth.

Three-handed, Brian Wood was the surprise package. Picking up unwanted pots and maneuvering himself into the lead, he quickly became the man to beat.

First to try and take down the chip leader was Augustino. Moving all-in from the small bling with Q6, the American was in trouble against Wood’s KQ.

Aggression Wins Gooch WSOP Title

With the board offering no help, it was down to two. Needing to redress the balance, Gooch was aggressive from the start. Pushing the pace, he finally caught a break with trip fours.

Moving in on the turn, the name known as TheBigGift was unbeatable. As the inconsequential river fell, Wood’s avatar faded to grey and Gooch scooped the final pot.
