After announcing they wanted to break the record for the richest online poker tournament in history, the organizers knew consistency was going to be crucial. With the buy-in set at $5,300, at least 3,778 players need to enter the online MTT for the $20 million guarantee to be met.

Fluctuating Interest Raises Concerns

At the time of writing, three starting days have seen the number of entries hit 3,170. However, prior to a resurgence on Day 1C, the outlook was bleak.

Despite Day 1A attracting 1,574 entries, interest dipped significantly on Day 1B. With just 484 players prepared to part with $5,300, the third opening flight needed to see a significant improvement to ensure Partypoker wasn’t hit with sizable overlay.

With Sunday being the busiest day on the online tournament calendar, the Partypoker Millions Online rallied and saw 1,112 entries ante-up. Now just 600 buy-ins away from hitting the $20 million guarantee, the record-breaking event stands a much better chance of setting a new standard.

Partypoker to Usurp PokerStars

By becoming the richest online MTT in history, Partypoker will end the decade-long dominance of PokerStars. All of the ten largest online tournaments have taken place on PokerStars, with the 10th Anniversary Sunday Million in 2011 holding the top spot thanks to its $12,423,200 prizepool.

Once completed, the Partypoker Millions Online will exceed that total by at least $7.6 million and, in turn, stand as a testament to the operator’s growth over the last 12 months.

Since launching its Millions tournament series in 2017, the online operator has introduced a number of innovations. As well as bringing in EPT founder John Duthie to oversee the tour’s growth, Partypoker has hosted Live events in various locations around the world.

On top of giving high and low stakes players new ways to play, Partypoker Live has also rolled out its own tournament currency. Known as Partypoker Live $$$, the coins can be used to enter tournaments as well as pay for accommodation and other services related to the operator’s Millions events.

The culmination of these innovations and the company’s reconfiguration over the last few years will see it close out 2018 with a new world record.
