The recent news of Johannes Strassmann‘s death caused a wave of questions to flow out across the poker community. Why such a seemingly healthy young man would meet such an untimely end in a foreign country was a mystery that many friends and high stakes fans were anxious to unravel.

On June 21, Strassmann disappeared in the Slovenian town of Ljubljana and, after a police hunt, his body was eventually found floating in the local river. In the days following the announcement of Strassmann’s death, a number of rumors began to circulate as to the cause; however, none seemed to hold any weight.

New Information Comes to Light

However, in the last few days, a smattering of new information has filtered through from local investigators. Following a coroner’s reports, it’s been announced by police that the German pro had traces of a hallucinogenic drug in his system.

At present, Slovenian investigators are refusing to name the illegal drug in question, but according to an eyewitness, Strassmann was seen taking “magic mushrooms” with a group of people at a riverside café prior to his death. Speaking to German newspaper Bild, the eyewitness also claims that Strassmann was seen with three local men, including one who was a known drug dealer.

The Mystery Café

After taking the hallucinogenic drugs, Strassmann reportedly left the table he was sitting at and ran down a side street, leaving his phone behind in the process. This was the last time the 29-year-old was seen alive, which has prompted some to speculate that the powerful properties of the drug may have caused him to fall into the river and, ultimately, drown.

As yet, authorities have declined to release any further details until a concrete account of the events leading up to Strassmann’s death has been formulated.

The Effects of Magic Mushrooms

Magic Mushrooms, or psilocybin mushrooms, as they are technically known, are a hallucinogenic drug that contains so-called “psychedelic” properties. Consumed orally, this drug has differing levels of potency, depending on the variety of mushroom (psilocybe semilanceata is the most common) consumed and the main effects are a distortion of the senses.Colloquially known as having a “trip”, users of magic mushrooms generally report having cartoon-like hallucinations and an increased or decreased perception of time and space. Occasionally, users can experience a “bad trip” and become anxious, disoriented and sick.
