Martin Jacobson Named Sweden’s Top Player

Jacobson named king of Sweden.

Martin Jacobson, Sweden’s 2014 WSOP Main Event hero, has just been named as Player of the Year by Swedish publication Poker.se.

Back in November, Jacobson managed to complete his route past more than 6,000 players to beat Felix Stephensen and bank $10 million.

That accomplishment, plus several cashes on the European scene at the close of 2014, gave Jacobson the title ahead of previous Swedish POY’s including Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom, Chris Bjorin and Robin Ylitalo.

A Double Win for Jacobson

After the votes were cast and the results tallied up, Jacobson had managed to capture 80 percent of the votes to claim the accolade at the fourth time of asking.

As well as scooping the POY title, Jacobson also picked up the site’s Poker Ambassador Award after collecting more than twice the amount of votes as the runner-up, Simon Lindell.

Commenting on his latest accolade, Jacobson told Pokernews that his aim is to represent the game as positively as possible and encourage more people to ante-up.

It is of course a great honor to be voted not only the Swedish Player of the Year but also first choice as Sweden’s Poker Ambassador. My goal is to live up to the expectations by representing poker in the best way possible and hopefully encourage more people to become aware of this incredible game,” said Jacobson.

Jacobson has long been considered one of the top tournament grinders in Europe as well as an excellent representative for Swedish poker, but 2014 was undoubtedly his breakout year. Leading up to last year’s WSOP, Jacobson had won just over $4 million, including titles in numerous side events and high rollers in Europe.

However, his victory in the WSOP Main Event was the pinnacle of his career so far and a win that catapulted him to notoriety on an international stage.

Another Profitable Year for Swedish Poker

In addition to Jacobson claiming two titles in the recent round of awards, Swedish online star, Mikael ‘punting-peddler’ Thuritz won the virtual POY title. After finishing behind Jacobson for the overall POY title, Thuritz, who has won more than $2.5 million online, managed to secure 63 percent of the vote in the Internet-focused poll.

Also picking up an award from Poker.se was Robin ‘BigMeech99’ Colbin for Breakthrough of the Year. The young player managed to scoop three Triple Crowns in a single month back in 2014 and that allowed him to collect 41 percent of the votes to finish ahead of Simon Mattson.

Overall, Swedish poker players enjoyed another profitable year but none were able to match the accomplishments of Jacobson. As well as topping the list of Swedish winners in 2014, he managed to finish second on 2014’s money list just behind Daniel Colman who banked an impressive $15,440,919.
