A 90-year-old Georgia woman was charged this week with running an illegal poker game in her hometown of Albany. Police swooped in on the home of nonagenarian Mary Morgan on Saturday night at around 8.30 pm, breaking up the game and arresting over a dozen participants.

The operation was the culmination of a long-term investigation that included the Albany, Georgia Police Department’s Special Detail Unit, Albany Police Department’s Gang Unit, Albany Police Department’s Uniform Bureau, Albany Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau, Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, Dougherty County District Attorney’s Office, and the Probation and Parole Office.

The result: menace to society Morgan is now behind bars, where she has the dubious honor of being the oldest person ever to reside in the Dougherty County Jail, beating the previous record holder by seven years. She was formally charged with keeping a place of gambling, disorderly house, and illegal alcohol sales.

This could be the biggest boost to AARP since Christy Brinkley turned 60.

Lawn Equipment

Officers seized approximately $4,100 in cash, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, and a 2003 GMC Yukon with a trailer and “some lawn equipment” from Morgan’s house.

“This operation was the result of a two-month investigation into illegal activity at this residence which included illegal gambling, illegal alcohol sales, illegal tobacco sales, possession of cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and spice,” said Deputy Chief Mark Scott. And, apparently, lawnmowers.

“Everyone that was there was detained and interviewed,” added Scott. “Those who had outstanding warrants were charged for their warrants and those who were actually participating in gambling when the officers arrived on the scene were charged with gambling. Of course those who were in possession of illegal drugs were charged with that.”

Sending a Message

Police said that Morgan will be kept apart from other inmates in consideration of her advanced years.

“Whether it’s due to their advanced age or a physical handicap or anything that would cause them to be an additional concern, we would administratively segregate them and that’s the case with Ms. Morgan,” explained Colonel John Ostrander.

The case is now with District Attorney Greg Edwards, who, at a press conference this week, praised the efforts of law enforcement in removing this dangerous criminal from our midst.

“The … message we want show is that we are working in combined task forces to make sure that all of our law enforcement agencies are working together to make sure these operations are carried out,” he said. “Working with the District Attorney’s office have been representatives from the various agencies and I have, working directly with the agencies, particularly the Albany Police Department, embedded an assistant DA who helped coordinate a lot of the activities that were carried out in this operation.”

Operation Not-That-Fast and Scurrilous, completed.
