Stud was the poker game of choice for serious poker players before Texas Hold 'Em became popular. Like Texas Hold 'Em, stud poker players are dealt a mix of personal cards face-down and community cards face-up. Stud poker involves multiple betting rounds and depending on which kind of stud is being played there can be five or more betting rounds.

Stud Poker has a long history in the United States and was popular as far back as the Revolutionary War. At that time a version of three card stud poker was played but by the time the Civil War was raging five card stud had been developed. Seven card stud and six card stud are very similar except that in six card stud there is no final community card. Eight or better is a form of stud poker similar to seven card except that the players with the best and worst hands split the pot. Mexican stud usually involves a few variations on standard stud poker like using a stripped deck and removing a few cards, including some wild cards, and changing the order of consecutive cards so that straights are formed differently.
